Building the perfect home office
Does your home office inspire you and allow you to get down to doing your best work? We've put together a guide to take you through the creative steps you can take to decorate your home office for functionality and inspiration.
Proper lighting is key in every office. Ensure your office has plenty of natural light to help to cut down on eye strain and headaches. Natural light makes a space feel bigger—which is always a plus in a small space.
Since natural light improves mood and productivity, you want to position your desk close to a window - preferably one that gets more sunlight. Also, position your computer or laptop to ensure no glare from a window or overhead lighting.
We’d suggest you add a beautiful pendant lamp to your desk for task lighting.
2. Don't sacrifice form for function
You’re going to spend a lot of hours parked at your desk. Invest in ergonomically-correct, comfortable seating. Your desks, shelves, and storage should serve you, not the other way round. Consider your workflow and what items you need at your fingertips.
Here’s a tip: your home office furniture should complement the colors of your room, otherwise your workstation will feel out of place and soulless.3. Bring in the greens
Houseplants improve air quality and can give you a sense of calm. They clean the air and make your workspace feel more natural and inviting.
If your home office is a little on the darker side, you can get a low-light plant. Fresh flowers in a vase also go a long way in providing scent and beauty around your office.
Go for a snake plant or a ZZ plant. They both look great and are low maintenance. A money plant is not a bad option either if you want to keep em checks raining.
4. Life to the walls
Subjects in an Exeter study were asked to do an hour of work in four different environments ranging from the bare basics to an enhanced workplace with art and plants.
The result: Employees worked 15% quicker in enhanced environments. And, they were 32% more productive if they also had personal input on the art in their surroundings. For more advantages of adding art to your home office, check out this blog post.
Sometimes work gets demanding and stressful. For times like those, we recommend having images on your wall that inspire you. This could be your family, a special one, photos you took while on a vacation, the dream car or house you want, and just anything else that inspires you to keep on chasing your dreams.
Pro tip: While visually stimulating pieces inspire creativity, they can be distracting if too busy. Thus, the need for pieces with only a few colors in them.
5. Add some pops of color
A few bright pops of color will keep you inspired even when you’re bogged down with work. You could incorporate it through some flashy throw pillows or a patterned area rug to define the space and offer warmth to your office floor. A rug with geometric patterns is our top choice!
6. Organize vertically and horizontally
Let’s face it. There are not many home offices swimming in square footage. Using your space efficiently is of prime importance. Hang floating shelves on the walls to get papers and office equipment off the desk, and use vertical file folders on the desk to keep important papers within arm's reach.
Wooden or metal cube storage is a fun alternative to bookshelves since each space can be used for books, knickknacks, or baskets of odds and ends.
7. What's your style?
Above all, your office space should reflect your personality and work habits. If you desire a fashionable space, then dress up your home office with a focal wall for some added depth to your space and an elegant chandelier to add a little glamour.
But if you have trouble focusing in flashy environments, neutral colors, paired with natural wooden furniture, plants can do the trick. After all, your home office should inspire you to work better, smarter, and more creatively.

Art is the medium through which our souls connect, and because of this we recognize a part of ourselves in the art we buy. It’s in an artist’s expression that we find commonality, such as a world view, a shared emotion, or even a collective philosophy.
